Post-Anthropocene Poetry

Humanity's long-term impact on the global ecosystem has ushered the Earth into a new geological epoch — the Anthropocene.

In this era of continuous transformation, technology stands at the forefront, profoundly influencing all life. Interpreting technology has become crucial: what is the evolving relationship between humanity, the environment, and technology? Or perhaps we should transcend these distinctions, adopting an almost equal perspective to view the whole — a "New Nature."

Acer collaborates with new media art collective ULTRACOMBOS to explore this concept. Leveraging cutting-edge hardware and software, along with servers and workstations from Acer's subsidiary Altos, the project uses landscapes as its foundation to discover a new visual experience blending technology with aesthetic perception, weaving an audiovisual poem themed on the Anthropocene.

Spirit and Landscape

In the epoch of the Anthropocene, landscapes seem to gain new life, bearing the memories and transformations of countless generations. Like the four stanzas of a poem, we traverse the globe, ultimately drawing inspiration from waterfalls, glaciers, canyons, and mudstone. Each represents a facet of the brand, unfolding in sequence.

  • Iceland: Skógafoss / Bjarnarfoss

These majestic waterfalls are shaped by the interplay of volcanic activity and glacial forces. Their complex geological structures and abundant meltwater foster lush vegetation in the wet sedimentary landscapes, creating a remarkable fusion of landscape and ecology. Acer, committed to breaking barriers between humans and technology, embodies this spirit of harmony through its diverse product lines and sustainable innovations, crafting a rich and transformative brand identity.

  • USA: Grand Canyon National Park

With 2 billion years of geological history, the Grand Canyon showcases the effects of tectonic activity, river erosion, rainfall, wind, and mountain-building on layered rock formations. This iconic landscape reflects Nitro's vibrant and dynamic essence. Designed for diverse gamers, the brand’s bold red tones convey warmth and energy, while its powerful products support both everyday needs and high-performance experiences.

  • Switzerland: Moiry Glacier

Glaciers, massive moving solids, carve and deposit landscapes slowly over time. These movements preserve layers of geological and environmental history, akin to frozen time capsules. This mirrors SpatialLabs' groundbreaking 3D stereoscopic solutions, which unlock new dimensions in visual experiences, allowing users to access deeper layers of spatial information.

  • Taiwan: Tianliao Moon World

The mudstone surface of this terrain, with its grey-white saline coating, reflects moonlight at night, creating an ethereal glow that inspired its name. Humanity’s fascination with the moon has driven technological innovation, much like Predator, Acer’s high-performance gaming brand. It provides players with cutting-edge tools for adventurous exploration, enabling them to thrive in extreme environments.
Gaussian Splatting

In July 2023, the release of 3D Gaussian Splatting marked a breakthrough in virtual environment creation. Presented at Siggraph 2023, this innovative technique redefines 3D scene rendering, enabling high-fidelity visuals with smooth and realistic details, all achieved with remarkable efficiency.

This technology highlights the synergy between advanced rendering and hardware performance, aligning with our pursuit of pushing boundaries in creative expression through light and shadow.

Artistic Style

The Gaussian Splatting technique enables the creation of abstract, dreamlike artworks—seemingly random yet imbued with a sense of inner order. Each Gaussian blot acts as a distinct brushstroke, transforming the natural interplay of light (additive colour mixing) into a painterly interpretation of form and shadow (subtractive colour mixing).

By reimagining nature through technology, we adopt an Anthropocene perspective, stripping away the soft, translucent edges of Gaussian ellipsoids and replacing them with bold colour blocks. This sharpens transitions, rendering landscapes as layered slices of earth. The result captures the depth carved by flowing water, the sedimentation of mudstone over time, and the remnants of glacial epochs, presenting a vivid, defined interplay of form and texture.

Real-Time Interact

Our projection of this work envisions it as a poetic installation, with poetry itself likened to fragments of language floating deep within consciousness—waves that ebb and flow, alternately turbulent and gentle. Thus, "points," "movement," and "floatation" shape our interaction with the viewer, reflecting the potential of Gaussian Splatting technology.

Through precise interface and parameter control, this digital poetic landscape seems to dance perpetually in the air—never touching the ground, sometimes crystallising, sometimes flowing. It forms an intricate, self-weaving web of seemingly chaotic threads, meticulously calculated through powerful performance, continuing to evolve until the Anthropocene’s final moments.
